7 AliExpress smart-home finds under $15 that I actually use

There's a quiet truth about AliExpress smart home gear: a third of it is excellent, a third is fine, and a third belongs in the bin within a month. After buying roughly thirty devices over the past year, here are the seven I'd buy again tomorrow — and pay double for if I had to.
Every product below works with Tuya / Smart Life out of the box, plays nicely with Alexa and Google Home, and ships globally. Prices were checked in early June 2026 and tend to drift downward; if anything has crept above $15, swap to the alternative I list next to it.
What I look for before I click "Buy"
- 4.5+ stars with at least 500 reviews — under 500 is too noisy.
- A real Tuya/Smart Life listing (not just a generic Wi-Fi blob with no app).
- Sellers with 95%+ positive feedback and a year of history minimum.
- Specs that match the listing photos — if the box in the photo says 16A and the spec sheet says 10A, walk away.
Under $15 doesn't have to mean disposable — it means choosing the parts of your home that don't need to be precious.
The list
All seven below: I've owned them for at least eight weeks, all are still working, and three are duplicated across rooms because the price made it easy.
Setup tips that save an hour
- Put your phone on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi before pairing — Tuya devices don't see 5 GHz at all.
- Name devices by room, not function — "Bedroom plug" beats "Lamp" once you have six lamps.
- Create scenes early. Even two — "Evening" and "Out" — change how you live with the gear.
When NOT to buy on AliExpress
Three categories I avoid: anything mains-wired without a verified safety mark (in-wall switches, water valves), cameras (privacy track record is shaky), and locks (the firmware update story is bad). Pay Amazon prices for those three.
Everything else? The price-to-quality ratio on AliExpress is, frankly, hard to beat.
- Tuya RGB + warm-white smart bulb (E27) — AliExpress
Works with most ecosystems via the Tuya/Smart Life app. The warm white is real warm white — not just dimmed RGB — which makes it the only color bulb I leave on for evening reading.
- Aqara door & window sensor T1 — AliExpress
Tiny Zigbee contact sensor. Battery lasts 18+ months, latency under 200 ms. Needs an Aqara/Zigbee hub — but if you have one, this is the workhorse you'll buy six of.
- 16A Wi-Fi smart plug (with power metering) — AliExpress
The power-metering version pays for itself in a week — I caught a phantom 40W draw on an old TV and replaced it. Spend the extra dollar on the metered SKU.
- PIR motion sensor (Zigbee, battery) — AliExpress
Wall-mounted, no wiring, 2-year battery. Triggers my hallway scene at night so I never reach for a switch in the dark.
- Tuya temperature & humidity sensor — AliExpress
Tiny e-ink display, syncs to the app. I put one in each room and let the data tell me which window seals to replace.
- Wi-Fi smart curtain motor (Tuya) — AliExpress
The 'feels expensive but isn't' purchase of the year. Clips onto most curtain rods, opens itself at sunrise. Mine has run twice a day for nine months.
- Smart IR remote bridge (universal) — AliExpress
If you have anything with an infrared remote — old AC, TV, fan — this one tiny device pulls all of them into the smart home. Underrated.
